A steady start for 2011

Updating my goals for the year, I can say things are goin well so far. I bought a box of outriders, helrocket, empire wizard kit, Imperial Confessor for a Warrior Priest, and a HE griffin to possibly convert a new empire griffin general. I currently have a karl franz griffin model and also the empire general on griffin. I just love the look of the new griffin, frick'n sick nasty. Besides buying stuff, which is the easiest part of the goal list, I have managed to assemble some models. 40 Halbidiers, Wizard, 27 Saurus Warriors, Helstorm Rocket, and some odds and ends is what I have managed to build. Next up 18 Empire Swordsmen, 5 Outriders, and hopefully some green stuff projects.

I am still tweaking my Empire Army to include an engineer in a artillery battery of Great Cannon, Mortar, and a Helstorm Rocket Battery. I have been getting more confident with the empire but they are still heavily reliant on the BSB and General Leadership Bubble. Utilizing the Large Target 18" General on Griffin Leadership helps keep the 9 Ld across the army. I am dropping a cannon form the old list to add the engineer and swap out a mortar to get the helstorm rocket. I am curious to see what difference will make in the list. It will reduce a cannon ball per shooting phase for a re-roll and improve a pie plate to Strength 5. I am also putting my lvl 4 wizard into the swordsmen unit with the BSB to help protect the wizard. I am not sure if this a good idea or bad, yet. Miscasting could hurt the unit, though its intent is a bunker for the BSB. I moved the Warrior Priest out of the Swordsmen and into the Greatswords to help combat efficiency. Re-Rolls for the S5 hits should help the non-elites get some extra kills. Any comments or tip or changes with explanations would greatly appreciated.

Ouch

Ouch, say it all. K just showed my High Elves the door last night. I went in with very high hopes, only to end up running away with my tail between my legs. The game started out great. K went first and killed 3 Knights, a bolt thrower, and a few archers. I was very happy with that out come considering his army. 2 cannons, 2 mortars and 12 outriders. Then everything went down hill fast. At one point, I think I had 10 Power dice and rolled 6 ones on them. Almost 50 archer shots yielded I think 1 wound. I watch my Knights need to roll a 5 or better for a charge to roll a 3. K over ran a unit he killed with halbreds 10 inches to crash into the flank of my Pheonix guard. That just a hand full of problems I had last night. The good side of things, is that i adjusted my list a little more. I removed the lord and his cav unit from my list. I also dropped the Shadow Warriors. In their place I add a Unit of 19 White Lions with a Hero for a General. I also added 5 Reavers and a Hero on an Eagle.

busy week update

Sorry for the lack of updates recently! Well a very busy week is winding down to a big even busier weekend. My son's 3rd bday and my 29th was all packed into this past week and tomorrow is the epic finale. The first round with Chuck E. Cheese for my son's 3rd bday party is with 3 other toddlers. Ibuprofen and earplugs are packed and ready for saturdays main event. I plan on working on building some models as i watch the playoff football games. I did manage to pick up a warrior priest and some outriders from ebay about week ago.

In other news the new FAQ for WHFB is updated once again. After quickly skimming through the pdf, arnie and I discussed some of the changes and played some Black Ops. No game was played this week due to the schedule. In some other news I took the time to sort and inventory all my lizardmen models. To my surprise, I believe most of the lizardmen are built. The some of the last ones need to be assembled using green stuff. I purchased some green stuff from warstore.com about a month ago getting it so i would have it when the time comes. I am currently starting to research how to use green stuff properly. Any tips, tricks, or links would be much appreciated.

I plan on some more posts next week as my schedule should resume to normal, finally. I picked up a can of krylon primer in black and white to prime some of the figs. I read from many different sources that krylon is a good alternative to the high priced hobby brands. Any feedback on the krylon primer is also appreciated and needed before trying it out. Thanks for taking the time to read and take the time to just enjoy the hobby's depth.

High Elves

After a few crazy weeks, I am back with a little more high Elf info. I now have 2 High Elf list that i like to run. Getting away from my dragon based army, I wanted to see what a shooting based army would do. Well, with the new rules i have to rethink using Sea Guard and spearmen so much.

Being able to attack in 2 ranks with the archers makes it less of a big deal that the Sea Guard has spears. The big difference now comes with the difference in armor save and range of bows. I am finding it to be a better idea to ditch spearmen all together and go with archers and the Guard. Most of the time my spearmen get butchered Point for Point. In that case I might as well just sit back with archers and shoot them. If i want a unit that can move forward, just take the Sea Guard.

The Pheonix Guard has become my second favorite unit in the high elf army. I just love having a unit of 30 of them sit there FOREVER. K talked me into a good size unit of them, and I think he regrets it everytime he faces them. They are under priced. To get a 4+ Ward save cost around 45 Points. I can make a Noble with a 4+ Ward and a 5+ armor save for 134 Points. That's a whole 2 wounds worth. Or for 1 more point i can get 6 Pheonix Guards with Full Command. Really makes me wonder why people go Charracter crazy.

With the shooting and magic army, i have now begun to use some cav to off set the lack of movement and to try and keep things out of charge range. Running a Lord with a Great weapon, Lvl 1, and 2+ re-role-able alongside a unit of 11 Silver Helms with Full Command.

This is a big change from what I was doing with the Dragon army, but it is growing on me!
